SEXUAL ACTIVITY AFTER INFARCTION

It’s normal to feel anxious and unsure about resuming sex after a heart attack, heart surgery, or after a major heart attack. If you are afraid that a sexual activity can lead to a new heart attack you should know that this is quite rare. Sexual activity is not as demanding on your heart as you might think. In fact, if you can easily climb 2 flights of stairs or walk briskly, your heart can handle the increased demands of sexual activity.

Most people usually resume sexual intercourse within 2-3 weeks of leaving the hospital. However, some medications may limit your sexual ability. Some men may find that certain medications can make it harder to get or keep an erection. Talk to your cardiologist about your questions and concerns. Don’t feel like you have to have sex as soon as possible to show your love to your partner. A hug, a caress, a touch can also show your love and devotion. Confirm in advance the appropriate moment of intercourse.

Choose times when you are both rested and you will not be interrupted. Also set aside enough time. That way, if you have a slow sexual response, you can give yourself the time you need.
